Latin America Scholar to Offer Lecture at A&M International Feb. 3

If you are interested in Latin America and its rainbow of ideologies, social structures and operating systems, you're invited to attend the fourth lecture of the 2000 A.R. Sanchez Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series Thursday, Feb. 3 from 7-9 p.m. at Texas A&M International University's Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

In his lecture titled "The Idea of Latin America," Dr. Nicolas Shumway, director of the University of Texas at Austin's Institute of Latin American Studies, will present an unprecedented view of Latin America complemented by the experience he has gained in the subject as a Spanish American literature scholar.

Although Shumway's expertise focuses on Spanish American literature, his research interests extend to a myriad of subjects ranging from history to cultural studies.

He received his doctorate in 20th Century Spanish American Literature from the University of California at Los Angeles and has held his position at UT-Austin since 1995.

He has also held faculty positions at Yale University, Indiana University, Northwest University and Pepperdine University. Most recently, he was visiting professor at the Universidade de Sáo Paulo in Brazil.

In 1993, he was named the Tomás Rivera Regents Professor of Spanish at UT. He has also held positions as graduate advisor and chair of graduate admissions in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UT and as a member of the executive committee of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

He is the author of The Invention of Argentina and Español en Español, now in its fourth edition. Shumway has also published more than 30 articles and is currently at work on his new book, The Tribal Imagination: Argentine Nationalist Thought from 1880 to the Present.
