Texas A&M International University police officer Sylvia B. Steele has been selected by DARE International to head a two-week intensive training program in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

DARE, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is an organization dedicated to providing drug and violence prevention skills to children through partnerships with law enforcement, schools, and parents.

The intensive training, to be conducted in Spanish, will prepare 35 Honduran national civil police officers to conduct DARE programs in local schools. The training includes scenario exercises, leadership skills, child development, classroom management, teaching techniques, and communication skills.

Officer Steele will act as training facilitator and will oversee an international training team comprised of four mentors from Costa Rica, one mentor from Puerto Rico, and 10 novice mentors from San Salvador, and Colombia who will observe the training.

Steele was selected to head the training because she is among the only experienced, qualified DARE officers in America who is fully bilingual. She has previously participated in two DARE International trainings in Colombia and San Salvador.

She and other University police officers conduct DARE programs in local elementary and middle schools as part of the University's commitment to community service.
