Texas A&M International University students will benefit from a computer lab equipped with state-of-the-art Macintosh computers provided by a grant from the SBC Foundation. The grant supports the use of current and emerging technologies to produce futuristic learners and problem solvers.

The grant was announced at ribbon cutting ceremonies held Thursday morning in C Building.

The computers are part of a $750,000 grant from the SBC Foundation originally presented to the University's College of Education in 1996. That grant was shared with Dr. Leo Cigarroa High School, J.B. Alexander High School, San Agustin, and Laredo Community College as part of a collaborative teacher training program in systems thinking.

Lakshmana Viswanath, director of computer and telecommunication services, said the 35 Macintosh G3 computers are used by both students and faculty members.

A&M International President Dr. Charles Jennett said A&M International is grateful to the SBC Foundation for the support it has provided to all students. He also applauded the Foundation's efforts in securing a solid partnership with local schools and institutions of higher education to help prepare today's youth for the complex and highly technological world they will encounter upon graduation.

"The A&M International family would like to thank the SBC Foundation for believing in the importance of community outreach and establishing lasting partnerships that will help stimulate the intellectual development of young minds dreaming of future successes and self realization", Dr. Jennett said, "A&M International is committed to staying technologically advanced by acquiring equipment simulating the world students will step into as graduates."

Rose Delgado, Southwestern Bell's area manager, said the grant signifies an important investment.

"We are pleased to be able to contribute to the betterment of education in the city that we so proudly serve," Delgado said, "We believe that this investment will help improve the lives of our future customers, employees and the local community in general."

SBC is the philanthropic arm of Southwestern Bell and has long supported community development efforts with a special eye to education initiatives.
