Student Gets Valuable Experience as A&M International Student Leader
Gilbert Cardenas, a senior majoring in political science at Texas A&M International University is naturally intrigued by the political process.
He says he's getting valuable exposure to the world of politics through active involvement in student government and a paid summer internship.
The 1997 Alexander High School student says such involvements have provided him with some unique insights into his major field of study.
"I've had some remarkable experiences as president of our A&M International Student Ambassadors, as a justice at large with the Student Government Association and as a member of The Texas A&M University System's Chancellor's Student Advisory Board. I think these involvements have brought new dimension to my classroom learning," Cardenas said.
"This sort of experience is something that I truly cherish about A&M International. I don't think I could have had such a broad range of similar opportunities at another university and I'm making the most of it," he added.
Cardenas, who holds a 3.512 GPA, is the first recipient of the Dr. Henry Cuellar Endowed Scholarship in Political Science. The prestigious scholarship includes a paid internship this summer with State Representative Cuellar.
"Again, this is a dynamic opportunity for me to see the political process and public service in action. I'm honored to be selected for this consider it gan invaluable part of my education. I believe will give me an added measure of real-world experience for graduate school," he said.
The son of Humberto and Agustina Cardenas, he is considering the pursuit of a graduate degree at the George Bush School of Public Policy in College Station, Texas.
The Dr. Henry Cuellar Endowed Scholarship was established by community leaders, colleagues and friends of Dr. Cuellar. When fully funded, it will support a $1000 annual scholarship.
