The 2000 George Washington's Birthday Association begins with an official bang this Saturday with the presentation of the Texas A&M International University Twilight Pops WBCA Kickoff Concert from 4-6 p.m. on the University Plaza.

Admission is free of charge and the event is open to Los Dos Laredos.

Dr. Charles Jennett, A&M International president, said the University enjoys hosting the official kickoff to the border's remarkable celebration.

"We're delighted to host this kick off event. It's a great showcase for musical performances by our students and faculty and a marvelous way to begin our Celebration," Dr. Jennett said.

Executive director of student life and event coordinator Betty Momayezi said the Saturday afternoon event makes for an ideal family outing.

"We encourage everyone to come out to our alcohol-free and family friendly outdoor event. Our afternoon will include a fast-paced series of performances featuring the A&M International Band under the direction of Elmo Lopez Sr., vocalist Fritz Gechter, assistant professor of music; the Modern Dance Troupe and Classical Spanish Ballet under the direction of Bede Leyendecker; the High Twisters, under the direction of Araceli Rangel, the Ballet Folklorico and the Ballet Folklorico Juvenil under the direction of Gabriela Mendoza-Garcia and the debut of the A&M Mariachi Internacional, also under the direction of Elmo Lopez," Momayezi explained.

Food and refreshments will be sold during the concert and parking and security will be provided.
