Final A.R. Sanchez Lecture Scheduled, New Lecturers Announced

The uses and misuses of Holocaust photographs will be the focus of the fifth and last lecture of the 2000 A.R. Sanchez Distinguished Lecture Series scheduled to be held Tuesday, April 4 from 7-9 p.m. at Texas A&M International University's Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

Lecture presenter Dr. Marianne Hirsch, Parents Humanities Distinguished Professor, Dartmouth College, has studied the Holocaust (Shoah) and its ramifications. Her research has taken her to Bolivia to conduct video interviews of Holocaust survivors, to analyzing the Holocaust in film and video, tracing how Holocaust memories are transmitted between generations, and how post-Holocaust art can provide retrospective testimony.

Hirsch's slide lecture will examine the widespread contemporary uses and misuses of Holocaust photographs - both of images that have survived the Shoah and of new images produced by artists and filmmakers in recent years. Through examples, she will explore the documentary and narrative value of camera images in the classroom, in museums and memorials, in literary and historical writing, and in artistic representation.

She holds her Ph.D. in comparative literature from Brown University. Her B.A. and M.A. degrees in comparative literature were also earned at Brown. At Dartmouth, she is the Parents Humanities Distinguished Professor and Professor of French, Italian and Comparative Literature and Chair of the Comparative Literature Program.

The College of Arts and Humanities has announced the A.R. Sanchez Distinguished Lecture Series for 2000-2001. The lecturers, their scheduled date of appearance and topics will be the following:

1. Thursday, September 21, 2000 - Dr. Sheila Widnall, Rockefeller Mauze Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and, Associate Provost, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; "An Academic Goes to Washington."

2. Wednesday, October 11, 2000 - Dr. John Silber, Chancellor, Boston University; "Texas' Myths and Texas' Values."

3. Thursday, November 2, 2000 - Dr. Victoria H. Cummins, Professor of History, Austin College; "Art and Revolution in Mexico: Diego Rivera and the Mexican Muralists."

4. Monday, February 5, 2001 - Dr. Dennis J. Pogue, Associate Director of Preservation, Mount Vernon; "The Undiscovered George Washington."

5. Monday April 2, 2001 - Dr. Michael Lienesch, Bowman and Gordon Gray Professor of Political Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; "The Scopes Trial: Science, Religion, and American Politics."

All Lectures will take place in the Great Room at 7:00 p.m.
