Women named 'Pathmakers/Abrecaminos" for their roles in making more opportunities available for Laredo women will be honored at a reception hosted by the Texas A&M International University student group Women Advancing Women (WAW) at the Annual Brindis a la Mujer at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 3 at the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Great Room.

(WAW) selected the 13 from nominations received from the community at large. Those selected are featured in a new calendar that will be available for sale by WAW members at Friday's event. The $7 minimum donation supports WAW activities.

Bea Guevara, student representative for WAW, said the women are considered 'abrecaminos' who have opened up brighter futures for others.

"All of the women in the 'abrecaminos' calendar serve not only as role models but as reminders that women can succeed in making their dreams come true. It is through their hard work and determination that other women and girls can now choose life paths that had previously been closed to women," Guevara explained.

Those selected for the honor include:

The late Jovita Ida, State Senator Judith Zaffirini, Mayor Betty Flores, Maria de la Luz Cardenas, Judge Rosaura P. Tijerina, Mary Nell Sanchez, Viola M. Moore, Officer Michelle G. Hinojosa, Judge Elma Teresa Salinas Ender, Pamela R. Juarez, Raquel Valle Senties, Dr. Norma E. Cantu and Captain Annabelle G. Venegas.
