Dr. Faridoun Farrokh, associate provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Texas A&M International University, recently returned from participation as the Dow Visiting Scholar at Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, MI.

Dr. Farrokh's three-day visit included a series of lectures and seminars under the auspices of the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Visiting Scholar and Artists Program. His visit was hosted by the College of Arts and Behavioral Sciences' Department of Criminal Justice.

Farrokh's primary lecture was on "Islamic Justice and Multicultural America: Understanding Some Orthodoxies."

In it, he traced the formation of justice in early Islamic communities to its contemporary manifestations. He compared the Islamic perception of justice with Western views, highlighting differences and divisions as well as similarities and parallelisms. In addition to his lecture, Farrokh also participated in several class discussions and community group meetings.

A member of the A&M International faculty since 1989, Farrokh holds a doctorate in British Literature from Middle Tennessee State University.

His research interests are 18th century studies as well as Middle Eastern culture and history. He has written extensively on topics in current Iranian literature and is the leading translator and interpreter of the works of exhiled Iranian writer Goli Taraghi.

The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Visiting Scholars and Artists Program is supported by a grant from the Dow Foundation, established by the late Grace Dow in memory of her husband Herbert, founder of The Dow Chemical Company. The Dow Foundation is the fifth largest in Michigan and has provided almost $216 million in grant support to a variety of visionary programs throughout Michigan and the Midland area.
