Young Poets Welcome for Talleres/Workshops at Texas A&M International University May 4-5

Helping young writers to find their voice will be the focus of two special workshops offered for high school students May 4-5 at Texas A&M International University.

The Workshops are part of "Literatura Fronteriza: Letras en el Borde 2000," a three-day bi-national meeting of poets, novelists, essayists and literary critics that will be held in both Nuevo Laredo and Laredo May 5-7.

Organizer Dr. Norma Cantu said "Talleres/Workshops: Writing for Youth" will afford high school students a rare opportunity to learn poetry skills in English or Spanish in teachings designed for them.

"Our two presenters are gifted teachers who have a real affinity for bringing the world and craft of poetry to life for youngsters. I know this will be a meaningful day for students and an opportunity for them to expand their creative abilities," Dr. Cantu said.

"Talleres/Workshops: Writing for Youth" will feature renowned Texas Poet Teresa Paloma Acosta and Mexican writer Jose Luis Velarde

Paloma Acosta's work has been anthologized in numerous national publications and her chapbooks have become collector's items.

Most recently affiliated with the University of Texas' Mexican American Studies Center, she is finishing her third collection of poetry. Her workshop will be "English Poetry for Youth" and will be held Friday, May 5 in Killam Library 330 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Velarde, from Ciudad Victoria, has long been involved in cultural enriching activities in Mexico that have spanned a variety of media. He most recently managed radio programs for Contracorriente and Musica Infinita while also utilizing his graphic design skills for Cactus Editions. In addition to his own poetry writing, he has recently completed a novel.

His workshop will be Spanish Poetry for Youth and will be held Thursday, May 4, 2000 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. In Killam Library 430.

Talleres/Workshop participation will be limited to 12 participants.

The cost will be $60 per person per workshop, or both workshops for $100. Deadline for registration is MONDAY, May 1.
