Five new members of Texas A&M International University's chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society were initiated during a special ceremony held in the Great Room of the University's Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

The new initiates are Sharon Gonzalez-Bouvier, Sandra S. Gray, Hayley Kazen, Cynthia Ana Saldivar, and Kara Thorndyke.

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) seeks to encourage social research for the purpose of service. There are over 430 AKD chapters worldwide.

A&M International was awarded its chapter on 1997. Since then, its membership has grown to 22.

Dr. Cecilia Garza, AKD sponsor and chair of the University's Department of Psychology and Sociology, said membership in AKD is open to qualifying students and faculty. She encourages sociologists to join the organization.

"It's important to have a fraternity of people that share your same ideas in the discipline of sociology. Being in this organization is a way of learning from each other and keeping in touch with each other," explained Dr. Garza.

For further information, please call Garza at 326-2475. University office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday.
