Helping young writers to find their voice will be the focus of a special workshop offered for high school students May 5 at Texas A&M International University.

The Taller/Workshop, "English Poetry for Youth" will be held Friday, May 5 in Killam Library 330 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

It is part of "Literatura Fronteriza: Letras en el Borde 2000," a three day bi-national meeting of poets, novelists, essayists and literary critics that will be held in both Nuevo Laredo and Laredo May 5-7.

Organizer Dr. Norma Cantu said the workshop will afford high school students a rare opportunity to learn poetry skills in a course designed especially for them.

"Our presenter is a gifted teacher who has a real affinity for bringing the world and craft of poetry to life for youngsters. I know this will be a meaningful day for students and an opportunity for them to expand their creative abilities," Dr. Cantu said.

The Workshop will feature renowned Texas Poet Teresa Paloma Acosta.

Paloma Acosta's work has been anthologized in numerous national publications and her chapbooks have become collector's items.

Most recently affiliated with the University of Texas' Mexican American Studies Center, she is finishing her third collection of poetry.

Workshop participation will be limited to 12 participants. The cost will be $60 per person.
