A&M International To Hold Free Flamenco Dance Workshop June 17-18

Teens and adults who have intermediate or advanced skills in flamenco dance are invited to register for a free a two-day Flamenco Workshop to be held at Texas A&M International University on June 17 - 18.

The free two-day workshop will be held at the A&M International campus, on the second floor of the Kinesiology/Convocation Building, on Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1:30 - 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 18, from 10 a.m. -1 p.m.

The workshop will include instruction on choreography and proper technique for footwork, arms, castanets, rhythms and palms.

It will be conducted by guest instructor Rogelio Rodriguez, a renowned dancer who has performed with Charo, Jerry Lewis, Joey Bishop, Dom De Louise, Jim Nabors, and other legendary celebrities.

A&M International, the City of Laredo, and the Texas Commission on the Arts are sponsoring the event.

Persons who wish to participate in the workshop must pre-register by calling Bede Leyendecker, assistant professor of dance at A&M International, at 326-2640. Class size is limited.

Rogelio Rodriguez, a native Laredoan, has danced for most of his life. Among the teachers he has trained with are Nana Lorca, co-director of the Ballet Nacional de España, Jose Greco, Luisa Triana, Luis Montero, Roberto Amaral, and Linda Vega.

Rodriguez has danced and choreographed special works for the Houston Grand Opera and has performed with both the Houston Symphony and Houston Pops.

His performance group, the Rogelio Rodriguez Dance Company, began 20 years ago and has performed for presidents and heads of state.
