New Fine Arts Courses Open Creative Doors this Fall at A&M International

If you have always wanted to learn to strum a guitar or sing traditional mariachi songs, the new fine and performing arts courses offered at Texas A&M International University can open new creative doors for you this Fall.

Bede Leyendecker, assistant professor of dance and coordinator of fine and performing arts, said faculty members joining A&M International for the first time this Fall will offer new courses in violin, viola, voice, guitar and mariachi

Music courses in "Applied Music: Violin" (MUAP1101-103), "Applied Music: Viola" (MUAP 1101-104) and "Applied Music: Cello" (MUAP 1101-105), will be taught by Jennifer L. Cahill Clark, assistant professor of music.

In addition, "Voice" (MUAP 1101-102), "Guitar I" (MUSI 1192-161) and several mariachi courses will be taught this Fall. The instructor for these courses will be Dr. Rachel Cruz, assistant professor of music. A registration table for the mariachi courses will be set up Aug. 22 from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. in front of the Kinesiology/Convocation Building.

Leyendecker said Clark and Cruz are among several new faculty members joining A&M International this Fall.

Clark is currently completing her doctorate at the University of North Texas. She holds her Master of Arts in Music Performance from Texas Christian University and her Bachelor of Music, also in Music Performance, from the University of North Texas.

Prior to joining the University, she was a member of the music faculty at Laredo Community College. Additional teaching posts have included Texas Christian University and private viola and violin instruction.

Dr. Cruz earned her doctorate in musical arts, applied voice, at the University of Texas at Austin. Her Master of Music, applied voice, was also earned at UT Austin. Her Bachelor of Arts in Music was earned at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana.

Prior to joining the University, she was a member of the music faculty for the Fulmore Middle School of Austin. Additional teaching posts have included UT-Austin and St. Edward's University.

General registration for Fall 2000 will be held Aug. 22. from 11 a.m. -7 p.m. in the Kinesiology/Convocation Building. University office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
