A first-ever Fall Film Series at Texas A&M International University hopes to shed light on classic and recent offerings of film noir with weekly showings and informal lectures.

"Manifestations of 'Noir' " will be directed by faculty members Dr. Sean Chadwell, assistant professor of English and Dr. William Nichols, assistant professor of Spanish.

Film Noir ("black film") is a term coined by French critics who noticed how dark and black the looks and themes were of a style of American films that first evolved in the 1940s.

The series begins Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. in Bullock Hall 104 with a showing of "The Big Sleep" (1947). The Series will be held subsequent Thursdays and is free of charge and open to the public.

The Series seeks to link classic models of film 'noir' with recent innovations in the genre, often known as 'neo-noir.'

Drs. Chadwell and Nichols will briefly introduce the film and profile its stylistic and thematic debt to 'noir' before viewing. An informal discussion will conclude the showing.

The Fall Film Series schedule is as follows:

September 7 - "The Big Sleep" (1946)

September14 - "Chinatown" (1974)

September 21- "Blade Runner" (1982)
