A&M International 30th Anniversary History Exhibit Set at Center for the Arts Oct. 3-22
A look back at the history of Laredo's hometown University will take centerstage at the Laredo Center for the Arts Oct. 3-22 with the presentation of "Dreams to Reality," an exhibit celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Texas A&M International University.
An opening reception is scheduled on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Center, 500 San Agustin Avenue. The reception is free of charge and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display through Oct. 22.
The exhibit is primarily comprised of photos and photographic treatments from throughout the University's history and focuses on University's five presidents.
The presidents and their terms of service are:
Dr. Billy Cowart, President, Texas A&I University at Laredo and Laredo State University, 1970-1984.
Dr. Manuel Pacheco, President, Laredo State University, 1984 - 1987.
Dr. Leo Sayavedra, President, Laredo State University and Texas A&M International University, 1988-1995.
Mr. Joe Garcia, Interim President, Texas A&M International University, 1995-1996.
Dr. Charles Jennett, President, Texas A&M International University since 1996.
Display cases will include various University memorabilia culled from University faculty, students, graduates and partners.
The exhibit is named "Dreams to Reality," the theme for the University's year-long Celebration of its founding and service to higher education in South Texas.
Janet Eager Krueger, A&M International assistant professor of art, helped to design the show in cooperation with the University's Office for Institutional Advancement.
While now known as Texas A&M International University, the University was originally known as Texas A&I University at Laredo and was founded in 1970 as an upper-level institution offering junior, senior and graduate instruction.
It became Laredo State University in 1977 and joined The Texas A&M University System in 1989.
Its name was changed to Texas A&M International University in 1993.
With authorization by the 74th Legislature, the University expanded to four-year status in 1995.
It then moved to its 300-acre campus in northeast Laredo, on land donated by Sue and Radcliffe Killam, and welcomed its first freshman class.
