25 A&M International Students Attend Leadership Conference In Corpus Christi

Twenty-five student leaders from Texas A&M International University joined 75 of their counterparts from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi for a three-day leadership conference held at the A&M University-Corpus Christi campus.

The event, the Fourth Annual South Texas Leadership Conference, was designed to give students an opportunity to share positive leadership experiences, nurture and develop leadership skills, and prepare for active leadership roles on campus and in the community. It included presentations on officer transition, event planning, team building, diversity, crisis management, conflict resolution, and effective communication.

A&M International student leaders who participated in the conference were Comfort Appial, Imelda Chapa, Claudia Chavez, Yareth Coutino, Rebecca Davalos, George T. Diaz, Aurora Dominguez, Frank Estrada, Paula Flores, Maria G. Garcia, Paulita Garcia, Anissa Gonzalez, Ahlam Halifi, Aladdin Hall, Miguel Herrera IV, Ileana D. Juarez, Enrique Lobo Jr., Maribel Mata, Hipatia Medina, Maria Louisa Mendez, Jessica Ostos, Gloria Rios, Gilbert Sanchez, Monica Soto, and Nubia Yveth Tijerina.

Accompanying the students were A&M International administrators Gabriela Mendoza-Garcia, associate director of Student Development, Emilio Viera, associate director of Student Development/Recreational Sports, and David VerMilyea, director of Student Development.

Mendoza-Garcia noted A&M International was instrumental in establishing the Leadership Conference and has participated in the annual event since its inception in 1997. The conference rotates from campus to campus each year. A&M International hosted the event last year.

"A&M International helped establish the Leadership Conference to better equip students for their future careers and for the real challenges of a changing world. Conferences such as this help to underscore the University's commitment to augmenting superior classroom education by exposing students to additional learning opportunities not conventionally available to most students," said Mendoza-Garcia.
