A&M International Student Gives Back to Community, Prepares for Volunteer Fair

Mike Herrera, a sophomore biology major at Texas A&M International University, is proud to say that he has not forgotten about the city that has nurtured him.

A full-time student working 19 hours a week to support his education, Herrera knows that even busy students can give back to their community through volunteer work.

Herrera, who is president of A&M International's Student Ambassadors, a service club, recently led his group in assisting a local non profit agency clean the garden of a low-income couple.

"We worked under the hot sun moving rocks and dirt," Herrera said about the experience, "We were drained and had dirt coming out of our ears. But once we finished, we felt a sense of fulfillment that we had accomplished something that will help someone else."

Herrera and his fellow volunteers will be among students, staff, and faculty recognized at A&M International's Volunteer Recognition Day, scheduled for Monday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on the University Green.

The event, sponsored by the Student Ambassadors, honors those who perform community service and will host over 25 non-profit agencies present to provide information on numerous volunteer opportunities each has available.

In addition, a panel of stars will display names of University students, staff and faculty members who have actively performed volunteer work.

Volunteer Recognition Day activities will culminate with a luncheon in the University's Great Room from 1 to 2 p.m. The luncheon will include a recognition ceremony to honor volunteers. Three student organizations, the Student Ambassadors, Rotaract Club, and Student Government Association, will host the luncheon ceremony.

Meanwhile, Herrera said he encourages other students to participate in volunteer activities.

"I think that volunteer work helps build your character and bond with other people. You meet many interesting people and if you are a student, it indicates your character and commitment to a future employer," he said.
