High School counselors are on the front line of higher education and Texas A&M International University is hosting a special meeting and luncheon to help keep them up to date on changes in financial aid programs.

The event is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Participants will meet in a session from 10-11:30 a.m. in Bullock Hall 101 followed by a luncheon in the Great Room of the Killam Library.

Called the "Counselor's Update," it is now in its fifth year of offering, said Ronnie Gonzalez, director of Enrollment Management and School Relations.

"Our high school counselors are higher education's most important partners in helping to advise and counsel students on the importance of higher education and preparing themselves for its pursuit. The 'Counselors Update' is our commitment to keep them current with the various changes that are going on within higher education," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said each update, held three times a year, focuses on one key issue that has ramifications for student counselors. This Update's focus is on Financial Aid.

"We'll be looking at some of sweeping changes in the financial aid process from changes in the uniform application form known as the FAFSA to new programs and opportunities available that may help students to pursue their higher education here or at another institution," Gonzalez said.

The Update also provides the University Enrollment Management staff with an opportunity to outline the year ahead and share information on special activities that might interest counselors and their students, she said.

"For example, we'll be sharing information on our City-wide Financial Aid Fair, scheduled for Feb. 1, which attracted over 1000 high school seniors and their parents last year; as well as our "Come Home to Your University" community presentations scheduled in January which help to bring the University's message home in a special series of neighborhood presentations," she explained.

University office hours are from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday.
