Diego Rivera and Mexican Muralists Focus of A&M International's Next A.R. Sanchez Lecture

If you are interested in how Mexican muralist Diego Rivera and his contemporaries helped shape Mexico's colorful history, you are invited to attend the third lecture of the 2000-2001 A.R. Sanchez Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Room of Texas A&M International University's Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library (319).

Dr. Victoria H. Cummins, professor of history at Austin College (Sherman, Texas), will present her lecture titled, "Art and Revolution in Mexico: Diego Rivera and the Mexican Muralists." The lecture is hosted by the University's College of Arts and Humanities.

Dr. Cummins holds her Ph.D. in history from Tulane University. Her M.A. in history was earned at the University of Maryland, as was her B.A. in history. She has been a member of the Austin College faculty since 1977. Her research specialties include the social and cultural history of Colonial Latin American and Twentieth Century Mexico. She has traveled and studied extensively in Spain, Mexico, Europe, South America and Cuba.

She was awarded a Fulbright-Hays Dissertation Fellowship for archival research in Spain and Mexico and has received numerous Richardson Foundation Faculty Research Grants at Austin College.

She serves on the board of Editors of Colonial Latin American Historical Review and is a member of the National Screening Committee for the Institute of International Education (Fulbright) Travel Grants.

Her publications span a diverse range of journals and texts and include The Americas: A Quarterly Review of Inter-American Cultural History, Great Lives from History: Renaissance to 1900, Colonial Latin American Historical Reivew, La Aurora, and the Latin American Reserach Review.

She is currently at work on "Santo Toribio's Miracles: An Inquiry into the Religious Mentality of Colonial Peru" and "The New Social History, the New Cultural History and the Study of Popular Culture in Latin America."

The next Sanchez lecture will feature Dr. Dennis J. Pogue, associate director of preservation at Mount Vernon on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at 7 p.m. in the Great Room. Dr. Pogue's lecture is titled, "The Undiscovered George Washington."
