A group of Texas A&M International University graduate and undergraduate students have received additional encouragement to continue their education thanks to six scholarships provided by the University Alumni Association.

Scholarships will be provided for one year and include an award of $500 per semester, said Elizabeth N. Martinez, scholarship selection committee member.

This year's recipients include two freshmen, Azalia Felicha Gomez, a business major, and Felipe de Jesus Pantoja, a criminal justice major. Two other undergraduate students, Francisco Eduardo Gonzalez, senior biology major, and Mary Elizabeth Gonzalez, senior accounting major, are also recipients. In addition, two graduate students, Syed Fazlurrehman and Ahlam Halifi, both pursuing a master's in information systems, have received scholarships.

"The Alumni Association has been serving our graduates since 1972 and to date, has awarded over $25,000 in scholarships to students. Through year-round fundraising efforts by our dedicated members, we are able to help students reach their higher education goals," Martinez said.

The undergraduate scholarship is available to freshman-senior level students. Applicants must be high school graduates, meet all entrance requirements to A&M International, be ranked in the top 20 percent of their class, and maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) in a full-time class load for a prescribed University undergraduate program.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors applying for the undergraduate scholarship must meet all University entrance requirements, have a 2.5 GPA, be enrolled full time and follow a prescribed University undergraduate program.

Applicants for graduate scholarships must meet all University graduate entrance requirements, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in baccalaureate degree or current graduate study, maintain a 3.0 GPA and follow a prescribed graduate or certificate program.

In addition, all applicants for undergraduate or graduate scholarships must provide two letters of recommendation and complete a personal essay question.

Application forms are available from the University's Office of Human Resources, located in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library, room 255 or from the University's Financial Aid Office, Dr. F.M. Canseco Hall, room 302.
