Texas A&M International University students who need financial aid have plenty to choose from, including grants, scholarships, College Work Study Programs, and loans.

Changes in federal assistance programs, new scholarships, and other programs have made higher education more affordable and accessible, said Araceli Rangel, A&M International's Director of Financial Aid.

"During the 1999-2000 academic year, a total of over $8,000,000 in financial aid was awarded to A&M International students," said Rangel.

Financial aid can help reduce costs considerably. Average financial aid packages for a 12-hour course load can be as much as $6,950.

Vital information about financial aid will be available at a city-wide Financial Aid Fair to be held at A&M International's Kinesiology/Convocation Building Thursday, Feb. 1, from 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Rangel said the free event is expected to provide over 2,000 students and their parents with vital financial aid information.

The Fair will feature everyone from lenders to volunteer income tax preparers.

"Everyone from lenders to volunteer income tax preparers will be on hand. There'll be lenders to provide information on loan programs, VITA volunteers to assist in income tax preparation, and representatives from several local and regional scholarship providers. We'll also be able to help people with the necessary paperwork for financial assistance and even electronically transmit information to help speed the process. Other schools will also have representatives attending," she explained.

The University will host campus tours at event and participants will be able to register for prizes, including scholarships. Student clubs will also share information on their activities. Refreshments will be served.
