Children's Mexican Ballet Folklorico Classes Begin Jan. 20

Boys and girls ages 5 - 18 are invited to enroll in "Mexican Ballet Folklorico" classes at Texas A&M International University.

Two session of classes will be held at the University on Saturdays. Class dates are as follows: Session I - January 20, 27, February 3, 10, 24 and Session II - March 24, 31, April 7, 21, 28.

Times for both sessions are: 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m., Grades 7th - 12th (ages 12 - 18); 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m, Grades 4th - 6th (ages 8 - 11); 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m, Grades 1st - 3rd (ages 5 - 7); and 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., Boys, Grades 1st - 5th (ages 5 - 10).

Cost is $30 for either session or $50 for both sessions. Previous dance experience is not required.

Classes will focus on dance principles to build strength, balance, posture, grace and discipline. Students will learn the basics of "zapateado" footwork then master the fundamentals of Mexican Ballet Folklorico including correct skirt work, dance techniques, and performance style. Additionally, Mexican culture, traditions, and customs will be explored.

Instructor will be Gabriela Mendoza-Garcia, director of the Texas A&M International University Ballet Folklorico and former professional folklorico dancer with the Roy Lozano Ballet Folklorico de Texas.
