'Concert in Duo' Scheduled at A&M International Jan. 30

Two musical artists will join in an innovative program of duos scheduled Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at Texas A&M International University's Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library's Great Room.

The event will be free of charge and open to the public.

Jennifer Cahill Clark, violist and A&M International visiting assistant professor of music, will be joined by pianist and long-time former Laredo music educator and composer Sylvia Hazlerig for "Concert in Duo."

The evening's program will include Franz Schubert's "Sonata in A minor Arpeggione", a favorite of many musicians, originally written for the unique period instrument, the arpeggione. Also scheduled are two works composed by Hazlerig: a theme and variations entitled "A Voice Crying In The Wilderness," and "Sonata 2000 for Viola and Piano."

Cahill Clark said she has long admired compositions by Hazlerig and has enjoyed performing her works both in Laredo and in Colorado and said she is looking forward to the opportunity to work with her again.

"It's not often that artists are blessed to be able to perform with the composer and I'm truly excited by this rare opportunity. These two compositions are especially indicative of Ms. Hazlerig's composing skills. One was written while still in school at the University of North Texas, and one just this past year. She plans to publish these works and others in the near future. She enjoys writing for the viola, and is currently working on another composition for viola, cello, and piano," Cahill Clark explained.

She noted that in addition to the concert performance, Hazlerig will be meeting with University students in music and composition classes.

"Again, this is a special privilege for our students -- many are exploring composition and theory at various levels -- to meet with a composer of merit and discuss the challenges that composers face on a daily basis," she explained.

Cahill Clark joined the University faculty in Fall 2000. She holds a Masters in Music Performance from Texas Christian University (TCU) and a Bachelors of Music, also in Music Performance, from the University of North Texas (UNT). She is currently completing her doctorate at UNT.

In addition to her classes, she directs the University's A&M International String Ensemble. Prior to joining the University, she was a faculty member at Laredo Community College.

Hazlerig, who was a prominent member of the LCC faculty from 1979-1997, holds a Masters in Music Literature from Central Missouri State University and a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Theory from the UNT.

She is retired and now lives in Colorado.

Hazlerig retains many fond memories of Laredo and her students here and is looking forward to revisiting.

"Laredo retains a special place in my heart and I am happy to have this opportunity to return to the community, meet old friends, and to visit with the students at A&M International, " she said.
