Nursing students and faculty of Texas A&M International University's Dr. F.M. Canseco School of Nursing will join faculty and students from schools of nursing of the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas in Nuevo Laredo, the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosi and the Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila for three days of classroom lectures, special presentations and opportunities to dialogue and exchange information from January 26-28.

The Canseco School of Nursing hosts the visit annually for a course on International and Border Health Nursing (NURS 4440), a course that explores the realities and challenges of border health and the impact NAFTA and maquilas have had on border health, the profession of nursing , and the future socioeconomic growth and development of Laredo and Nuevo Laredo.

Both the course and visit are part of the University's unique international mission.

Friday, Jan. 26, the visitors will tour the campus, meet with A&M International nursing students, and attend a special presentation by Dr. Janet Gottschalk, faculty member with the Canseco School of Nursing.

Titled "Health in the Era of Globalization," it will be held in Canseco Hall room 101 at 1:15 p.m. The presentation will be in Spanish and is open to the public.

On Saturday, the Facultad de Enfermeria in Nuevo Laredo will host a visit to several sites in Nuevo Laredo, including colonias and maquilas, to gain a different perspective on the realities of health care on the border.

The group will meet at A&M International again on Sunday to view videos on health-related issues. They will also reflect on the information learned during the visit and make plans for ongoing dialogue and interchange.
