A nationally known expert on technical reading will present a free lecture on Wednesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Dr. Leo G. Cigarroa High School Library.

Dr. Rosemary Potter, author of Technical Reading in the Middle School, will provide the lecture. Educators, parents and interested community members are encouraged to attend.

The presentation is co-hosted by the Laredo chapter of Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) International, the educational honor society, and Texas A&M International University's College of Education. A regular meeting and election of PDK officers will precede the lecture.

Dr. Potter's lecture will focus on how a school system implemented technical reading in a middle school with a focus on improving reading at the secondary level.

The three-year project involved the innovative use of eight components and has special relevance for Hispanic and Limited English Proficient (LEP) students.

Potter, a classroom teacher for over 37 years, earned her doctorate at the University of Miami. She also holds an M.S. from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a B.S. at Maryville College.

Known for her pioneering work in the use of commercial television in the curriculum, she is author of numerous articles, books and educational materials, including the script for a special episode of the NBC-TV comedy "Different Strokes."
