Hundreds of Laredo and area high school students will explore education as a possible career during a one-day information workshop Friday, April 20, from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the Great Room of Texas A&M International University's Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

"Discover Teaching Day 2001" is organized by A&M International's College of Education and aims to introduce high school juniors and seniors to the field of teaching through intensive sessions focusing on numerous aspects of the career.

Students representing both Laredo and United Independent School Districts, in addition to Bruni, Carrizo Springs, Canyon (New Braunfels), and Cotulla High Schools and the Edinburg Teacher Academy, will participate.

A welcome will be provided by Dr. Rosa Maria Vida, dean of the College of Education; Dr. Paul Cruz, LISD superintendent; Dr. Jerry Barber, UISD superintendent; and Teresa Hein, Regents' Initiative Project director.

Cynthia Ramirez, recruitment coordinator for the College of Education, said the event will provide students much-needed exposure to the teaching profession, adding that approximately 240 students will be participating.

"This workshop is of greatest importance to these students because they need to be aware of the career options available to them," Ramirez said, "The advantage to attending this workshop is that the speakers are experienced educators who can provide insightful information to students seriously considering careers in education."

Some of the topics discussed will include early childhood education, special education, math and science education, and physical education. In addition, presentations will be provided on "Creativity in the Classroom, "On the Job, In the Classroom," and bilingual education, Ramirez said.

Students will also meet with A&M International Admissions and Financial Aid representatives, Ramirez said.
