Texas A&M International University is an institutional member of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE).

University president Dr. Charles Jennett said the University and the State's leading advocate for equity and diversity in education share a commitment to helping Hispanics participate in higher education.

"Like TACHE, which has been an advocate for Hispanics for over 25 years, our University has for 30 years helped to assure that Laredoans and South Texans do have access to an international quality education here. We will continue to share TACHE'S commitment to helping Hispanics increase their participation in higher education," Dr. Jennett said.

Jennett noted that with the phenomenal growth of the Hispanic population in Texas, several major challenges are being faced by higher education.

"We now know that 55% of all students in grades 1-4 are Hispanic. The implications for higher education when these children reach college-going age in 2008 are staggering. We must dedicate ourselves to finding workable solutions that increase access to and retention in higher education. In addition, we will continue to work to build the most diversified faculty and staff in our University to reflect the community and populations that we serve," he explained.

TACHE offers members a forum for the discussion of issues related to Hispanics in Texas higher education and works cooperatively with members and other partners to provide workable solutions to these issues.

The organization works through a variety of partnerships and collaborative efforts with State Legislators, organizations that share its goals, the business community and Texas colleges and universities.
