The celebration of Nurses Week, May 6-12, will take on special meaning for student nurses at Texas A&M International University's Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing.

The Canseco School of Nursing is currently developing its own local student nurse honor society with the intent of becoming a Chapter with the Sigma Theta Tau (STT) International Society for Nursing.

A special reception will be held on Wednesday, May 9 from 3- 5 p.m. Canseco Hall room 111. The ceremony inducting honor students is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Dr. Susan Baker, Canseco School of Nursing Director, said the effort is appropriate given the program's growth and number of graduates.

"As our program has grown tremendously, we believe now is an appropriate time to launch our efforts to secure a local chapter. We plan to induct 32 past and present honor graduates to begin this process," Dr. Baker said.

Dr. Baker noted that induction into the honor society is reserved for students who excel.

"Our efforts are always dedicated to helping all students to succeed, but we must give special recognition to those who excel. Many have gone on for graduate education and to assume leadership positions in the nursing field locally and regionally," she noted.

She said the Canseco School of Nursing is hoping to encourage STT members of other chapters who reside in Laredo to join in their initiative.

"In addition to our student inductees, we hope to encourage other community members of STT to join us in our efforts to secure Chapter status. We need to meet as a local honor society for at least one year and weneed to have at least 100 members to be eligible for Chapter status. We encourage STT members and others from throughout the community to join us Wednesday, " she said.
