A&M International Faculty, Staff Study Spanish in Mexico
A group of Texas A&M International University faculty and staff members are taking advantage of a unique exchange study program this summer to learn Spanish at the University of Guanajuato in Guanajuato, Mexico.
The Language Program for Faculty and Staff is a four-week intensive program designed for those interested in learning Spanish. Currently participating in the program are Dr. Kimberly Folse, assistant professor of sociology; Dr. Sean Chadwell, assistant professor of English; and Michael Hetland, service specialist for Computer and Telecommunication Services.
The program consists of language instruction including grammar, conversational Spanish, Mexican history, and Latin American Literature.
Participants are hosted by their Mexican host families for the duration of their stay.
Jannet Garcia, director of the Office for International Programs, said the summer Language Program offers both faculty members and staff the opportunity to learn a new language while exploring a country rich in culture and history.
"Guanajuato is a beautiful colonial city, where many cultural and social activities take place around the 'Jardin Union', a plaza in downtown Guanajuato. The staff of the University of Guanajuato has been most welcoming to the A&M International group, and we are very much impressed with their hospitality," Garcia said.
The University of Guanajuato, with which A&M International has an agreement, was founded in 1732. Its Language School offers courses in English, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Latin and Spanish.
Garcia said that a group of five University of Guanajuato faculty members will visit A&M International July 8 - Aug. 4 for intensive English lessons.
