Flamenco Workshop Taps on Summer Heat at A&M International

The percussive sounds of castanets will perforate the summer heat as veteran flamenco dancer Rogelio Rodriguez returns to Texas A&M International University offering a lively Flamenco Workshop June 23-24.

The free, two-day workshop is presented by A&M International, The City of Laredo, and The Texas Commission on the Arts, and will be held on the second floor of the Kinesiology/Convocation Building on Saturday, June 23, from 10 a.m. - noon and 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 24, from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

The workshop is geared for those who have intermediate or advanced skills in flamenco dance. This year's workshop will include the study of "Alabina" and "Tanguillo."

Rodriguez, a renowned dancer and guest instructor, has performed with Charo, Jerry Lewis, Joey Bishop, Dom De Louise, Jim Nabors and other legendary celebrities. This is the second year he offers a workshop at A&M International.

A native Laredoan, Rodriguez has trained with numerous instructors including Nana Lorca, co-director of the Ballet Nacional de España; Jose Greco; Luisa Triana; Luis Montero; Roberto Amaral; and Linda Vega.

He has danced and choreographed special works for the Houston Grand Opera and performed with both the Houston Symphony and Houston Pops.

His performance group, the Rogelio Rodriguez Dance Company, began 20 years ago and has performed for presidents and heads of state.
