Things will be 'hooped up' this weekend at Texas A&M International University as the University hosts the ninth annual "Roundball on the Rio," benefiting the Texas Special Olympics Area 21. The University has hosted the event for the past 5 years.

Over 150 teams are registered to participate in the event scheduled Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 5-9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the southeast parking lot near the University's Physical Plant.

Proceeds go to scholarships for Laredo Special Olympics athletes.

Teams will play 3-on-3 basketball wherein players call their own fouls and a court monitor handles scores.

Brackets and goody bags for teams will be available Friday at the University's kinesiology-convocation building from 6-9 p.m.

For more information, contact Area 21 Director Maribel Santoya-Ferrone at 956-712-2144 or e-mail msantoya@sotx.org.
