Elmo Lopez, long-time band director who has been instrumental in music education in Laredo and has helped develop music offerings at Texas A&M International University, has been honored by the Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA) with its Lifetime Meritorious Achievement Award.

The Award was presented to Lopez in ceremonies at the TBA's 54th Annual Convention and Clinic in San Antonio recently.

TBA president Roger Edwards praised Lopez for his "outstanding contributions to our State as one of the truly great directors...who have consistently exemplified music education at its best."

Dr. Ray Keck, A&M International president, said the Award recognizes one of the region's champions of music education.

"This is a tremendous honor. Elmo Lopez has been Laredo's premier music educator for years, helping to bring the joys of music to thousands of students. His beloved presence has been pivotal for our program through his direction of our A&M International Band. We consider ourselves blessed to enjoy his support and involvement and believe that our students are the true beneficiaries of his abiding love of music," Dr. Keck said.
