Lamar-Bruni Vergara Scholarship Backs Teacher Education at University

Teachers wishing to pursue a master's degree in education can now rely on a new scholarship that will help them make their postgraduate dreams a reality.

The Lamar-Bruni Vergara Scholarship Program, designed for practicing teachers, encourages those intending to further professionalize their abilities as teachers.

Dr. Rosa Maria Vida, dean of the College of Education, said that the Lamar-Bruni Vergara Scholarship Program has a total of $51,000 available for this year and the same next year.

"The intent of this scholarship is to help teachers become skilled in providing quality education to school children throughout the Laredo region," Dr. Vida said.

With additional education, teachers will also be able to open doors to career advancement, Vida said.

"The scholarship will also help teachers gain professional development so that they can qualify for increases in salary as they climb their career ladder," Vida said.

Those interested must be U.S. Citizens, residents of Webb County, and be teaching with local school systems. In addition, applicants must meet admissions requirements to graduate school and to the College of Education. They must also be enrolled at the University as a full-time student, with a minimum of six hours. Applicants must be pursuing a master's degree related to schooling.

The deadline for application is Friday, Aug. 31. Students can obtain an application form by contacting Vida at the College of Education.
