UCLA Professor to Discuss Genetics at A.R. Sánchez Lecture

From concerns regarding gene alterations to medical ethics, author Dr. Gregory Stock will address a wide range of intriguing questions haunting today's society during the first installation of Texas A&M International University's 2001-2002 A.R. Sánchez Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series Thursday, October 4, at 7 p.m in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library. Admission is free of charge and open to the public.

During his lecture, titled, "The Human Genome Project," Dr. Stock, director of the Program on Medicine, Technology and Society at the University of California at Los Angeles' School of Medicine, will discuss genetic manipulation and its implications while helping to unravel the complex intersection of science, ethics and human behavior.

Stock received his Ph.D. in biophysics from Johns Hopkins University and his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Bioethics, and thus directly involved in the issues and arguments concerning this very contemporary discussion.

His commitment to these questions is reflected in his publication titles. He edited Engineering the Human Germline: An Exploration of the Science and Ethics of Altering the Genes We Pass to Our Children, which was recently published by Oxford University Press. His Book of Questions, an exploration of values, was a New York Times bestseller and is now in its 55th printing. He has also written two sequels: The Kids' Book of Questions, and The Book of Questions: Business, Politics, and Ethics. His upcoming book, Redesigning Humans, examines the complexities of genomics and reproduction and is due out later this year.

The A. R. Sánchez Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series honors A.R. Sánchez Sr. (1916-1992), a celebrated member of the Laredo community known for his philanthropic efforts, work ethic and generosity. All lectures are held in the Great Room.
