Physician to Discuss Breast Cancer Awareness at A&M International

Breast cancer prevention will be discussed at length during a free lecture to be offered at Texas A&M International University Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. in Bullock Hall, room 101.

Dr. César Tula, a local oncologist, will be the guest lecturer during the event, held in observation of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The lecture is being hosted by A&M International's Office of Student Health Services and is open to the public.

Angelina Cantrell, director of Student Health Services, said the lecture is designed to encourage women to conduct periodic self-breast examinations and to bring breast cancer awareness to the forefront of their minds.

"Breast cancer is a killer but unfortunately, there are so many women who still do not screen themselves for this disease because they are afraid they are going to find something," Cantrell said, "This lecture will hopefully raise that awareness level needed and help women to take preventive measures rather than reactive ones."

Dr. Tula is Board Certified in oncology, hematology and internal medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and is the medical director of the A.R. Sánchez and Iris Stewart Sánchez Cancer Center at Mercy Health Center.

Tula has been in private practice in Laredo since 1982 and is affiliated with the Laredo Medical Group. He is a member of the University of Texas MD Anderson Associates, American College of Physicians, and the American Medical Association.

He is a pioneer and a leader in oncology care in Webb County. He has been a volunteer for the American Cancer Society since 1984 and serves as vice president of the Webb County chapter.
