Babette's Feast Sixth Film in A&M International's Feasting on Light: 2001 Fall Film Festival

The sixth film for Texas A&M International University's Fall Film Festival Series: "Feasting on Light" is Babette's Feast. The film will be shown Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Bullock Hall 101 and is free and open to the public.

Set in 19th Century Denmark, this quiet yet moving film chronicles the lives of two spinster sisters who devote themselves to their father's religion. The title character Babette is a French refugee who comes to live with the older women and changes their lives through a magical feast.

The story is about food as well as artistic expression and was described by Leonard Maltin, film critic, as "subtle, funny and deeply felt. . . an instant masterpiece." The film won the 1988 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

Shown in Danish with English subtitles, the film is rated G.

After the show, there will be 15 to 30 minutes of commentary and questions and answers, led by Series creators Dr. Sean M. Chadwell and Dr. William J. Nichols II, both assistant professors in the College of Arts and Humanities.

The next film in the Series, Eat Drink Man Woman, will be shown on October 24.
