A&M International Sets Free Concert Nov. 5

A special concert featuring music faculty and students of the newly created Texas A&M International University College of Arts and Humanities Department of Fine and Performing Arts will be held Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Great Room.

Admission is of free of charge and open to the public.

Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, recently appointed chair of the department, said the concert, dubbed "Sounds of Joy," is being offered as a celebration of the growth of the fine and performing arts at A&M International.

"We're doing what we do best: striking up the band and hitting the high notes to celebrate the growth of this department, our remarkable student talent and a brighter future that awaits us all when our Center for the Fine and Performing Arts' construction is completed," Dr. Soto explained.

Groups scheduled to present during the free concert include the A&M International Chamber Music Ensemble under the direction of Jennifer L. Cahill Clark, the A&M International Chorale under the direction of Dr. Rachel Y. Cruz and the A&M International Classical Guitar Ensemble, under Soto's direction.

The evening's program will draw from an inspired assortment including selections ranging from classical offerings by Vivaldi, Dvorak, Mozart to vocal Latin Motets by Durufle, classical guitar selections by Tarreaga and Miller, chamber music selections by Reger and Corelli and

traditional spirituals arranged by Johnson, Hairston and Bartholomew.

Soto joined the University faculty this Fall and has been working diligently to rapidly expand the University's music program and offerings. The University is currently awaiting the launch of its new Bachelors program in Music.

New fine and performing arts offerings will be housed in the $22 million Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. The approximately 88,000-square foot facility will include rehearsal and performance spaces, classrooms, exhibit areas and a music hall. Its completion is expected in 2003.
