"Museum" to Teaching at A&M International Oct. 26

The art of teaching will come to life in a temporary exhibit by Texas A&M International University's College of Education teacher candidates Friday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

The event is free of charge and open to the public.

The exhibit, dubbed "A Museum Dedicated to the Art of Teaching," will feature presentations and projects by 60 students and will include learning centers, best practices and field-based projects. Visitors will be encouraged to tour the "museum," and visit with the students about their projects. Representatives of both local and area school districts have been invited to attend the event. The T-Star educational network is scheduled to visit the museum as part of a program on College of Education initiatives.

Teresa Hein, College of Education faculty member and project developer, said the "museum" initiative is designed to have multiple purposes.

"Primarily, this is designed to afford students an opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of teaching concepts and show their originality in teaching practices. With the presence of our guests, it also affords us an opportunity to introduce our soon-to-be graduates to potential employers who are looking for new teachers in their respective districts," Hein explained.

She noted that A&M International's College of Education produces the greatest portion of teachers in the Laredo and Webb County region.

She said efforts like the "Museum" initiative are indicative of the innovative approach taken by the College.

"Teaching is for us a near sacred calling. We take that calling very seriously and work diligently with our students to help them become the finest teachers possible," she said.
