Local and area high school students preparing for college entrance exams can take advantage of a unique offering at Texas A&M International University that familiarizes them with the tests and allows them to participate in academic and work-related activities.

The Bridge to Success program at A&M International is now accepting applicants for preparation courses for the SAT, ACT and TASP exams. Courses are free of charge and students who qualify can also take university courses equivalent to nine semester credit hours at A&M International during Summer Session I and II.

Martha Treviño, program coordinator for pre-college programs, said students will also gain valuable work experience.

"Students who come to our program will live on campus and have the opportunity to work in various University departments," Treviño said, "This way, they can get the work experience they need and get to know the University campus better."

She said that after admittance into the program, students will also receive assistance in meeting A&M International's admissions requirements.

Interested students must be high school seniors or graduating juniors from the class of 2002 from Zapata, Webb, Jim Hogg and Starr Counties, Treviño said.

In Laredo, students must apply at the Texas Workforce Center, 2389 E. Saunders, open from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Friday. The center's telephone number is 794-6500. Students from counties outside of Webb may apply at their local Texas Workforce Centers.
