A&M International Program to Help Students Get into Medical School

Texas A&M International University's College of Science and Technology is helping area students gain an edge by presenting the Early Medical School Acceptance Program (EMSAP) at local high schools.

Dr. Mario Garcia-Rios, director of the EMSAP program and associate professor of biology and chemistry, along with Heriberto Castro, a cohort one EMSAP student, will discuss the program at Martin High School at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 4. In addition, Cigarroa and Nixon High School students will view the presentation via the Trans-Texas Televideo Network (TTVN).

At 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 6 at J.B. Alexander Magnet School, both Magnet and Alexander High School students can hear about the program from Dr. Garcia-Rios.

Previous presentations have included St. Augustine High School , and presentations at other area high schools are expected to be scheduled.

The program helps outstanding high school senior students enhance their competitiveness in gaining admission into medical school. Offered in conjunction with The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB), students who are admitted to EMSAP will attend A&M International during the academic year and spend four summers at UTMB. During their senior year of pre-medical training at A&M International, they will be invited to apply to the UTMB Medical School if they maintain the program requirements.

Garcia-Rios said the EMSAP was an excellent opportunity to improve one's chances of getting into medical school.

"This program aids students that are interested in medical school and helps them become better prepared. It shows the admittance committee strong commitment and preparation. I encourage students to apply for the Early Medical School Admittance Program at A&M International," said Garcia-Rios.

Applications and program requirements are available from local and area high school counselors.
