The Texas Academy of Science (TAS) local host committee at Texas A&M International University wants to make sure all area science teachers consider attending the special science education session of the Texas Academy of Science on Saturday, March 2 at A&M International from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. This section will be open to all science teachers in Laredo, free of charge.

This year's Outstanding Texas Educator is Bobette Doerrie from Perryton High School. Doerrie will present her teaching methods and what she does to get results from her students. She received the Radio Shack National Teacher Award for 2000-2001 and was a Texas finalist for the Presidential Excellence Science Teaching award.

"We think area educators will really benefit from joining us," said Dr. Sushma Krishnamurthy, A&M International associate professor and local host committee chair.

Over 400 scientists from Texas and Mexico are expected to attend the three-day event that begins February 28. This is TAS' 105th annual meeting. Krishnamurthy said that the academy was very pleased to be able to include researchers from Mexico.

"It has been a long-term dream for the academy to include our Mexican colleagues. We will be able to offer Spanish interpretation for the presentations for them, and when they present their research, we will be able to offer English interpretation. Including both means that the research presented is much more complete," she said.

For more information, please contact Dr. Krishnamurthy at 326.2584, visit offices in Dr. F.M. Canseco Hall, room 313 J or email skrishna@tamiu.edu.

University office hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
