Red, white and blue will be in abundance for the official opening event of the 2002 George Washington's Birthday Celebration, the Texas A&M International University Twilight Pops WBCA Kickoff Concert, on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 3-5 p.m. on the University Plaza.

Admission is free of charge and the event is open to Los Dos Laredos.

Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, event coordinator, associate professor and chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, said this year's event will include performances by A&M International's music and dance groups as well as a patriotic costume contest, with children of all ages participating.

"This event, in which the entire A&M International family participates with music and dance, provides a perfect opportunity to officially kick off the much anticipated WBCA Celebration," Dr. Soto said, "As usual, we are proud to host this event on campus and open our doors for the community to visit our growing campus and see our multimillion-dollar Phase III construction."

The alcohol-free celebration is also designed so that families can enjoy a fun, outdoor activity together, Soto said.

"We encourage everyone to bring their lawn chairs and blankets, sit back, and rejoice in an afternoon full of melody, color and rhythms," Soto said.

Performers at the event include the A&M International Ballet Folklórico, under the direction of Gabriela Mendoza-García; the Symphonic Band, under the direction of Elmo López; and the Classical Spanish Ballet, under the direction of Bede Leyendecker.

Also performing are the Classical Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Gilberto Soto, and the award-winning Mariachi Internacional, under the direction of Dr. Rachel Cruz.

Refreshments will be served during the concert and ample parking will be provided.
