Public Forums Set for TAMIU Provost Finalists

Public Forums for the three final candidates for the position of Texas A&M International provost and vice president for academic affairs have been scheduled.

Candidates include: Dr. Juan N. Franco of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Dr. Galan M. Janeksela of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Dr. Jerry D. Thompson of Laredo. Dr. Bernie L. Patterson of Milledgeville, Georgia, has withdrawn his application from consideration.

All finalists will visit the city for two days over the next three weeks. The second day will include a public forum. Members of the student body, faculty, alumni and community at large are welcome to attend, said chair of the search committee, Dr. Rosa María Vida, dean of the College of Education.

"We would encourage all those interested in the University and the individual who will help to lead our continued academic growth to attend and meet our candidates," Dr. Vida said.

Candidates and their public forum dates, times, locations and backgrounds are as follows.

Dr. Jerry Thompson, A&M International dean of the College of Arts and Humanities: Wednesday, March 27, 1:30 p.m, Western Hemispheric Trade Center room 116.

Dr. Juan Franco, Regents' chief of staff and interim vice president for student services and dean of students at New Mexico State University: Wednesday, April 3 at 1:30 p.m. in Western Hemispheric Trade Center room 116.

Dr. Galan Janeksela, dean of the College of Health and Human Services and professor of social and community services at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga: Friday, April 5 at 2 p.m. in Western Hemispheric Trade Center room 116.

Thompson holds his D.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has held his current position since 1995 and has held faculty and or administrative positions at the former Laredo Sate University, Laredo Junior College and the University of New Mexico.

Franco holds his Ph.D. in counseling and educational psychology from NMSU and has been a part of that institution's faculty or administration since 1975.

Janeksala holds his Ph.D. in sociology from Iowa State University. He has held his current position at UTC since 1996. Other institutions he has served as a faculty member or administrator include Wichita State University and the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

The provost and vice president for academic affairs is the A&M International's chief academic officer and, as such, is responsible for the maintenance, development and implementation of academic programs for the University.
