The A.R. Sánchez Lecture Series presentation by former chief of the Cherokee Nation, Wilma Mankiller, originally scheduled for March 27, has been cancelled due to illness of the speaker.

The next lecture in the series will feature San Antonio Express-News metro columnist Carlos Guerra and is scheduled Monday, April 18 at 7 p.m. in the ballroom of the new Student Center. Guerra's presentation for the evening will be "Texas Politics in the 21st Century: Has South Texas Come of Age?"

Guerra's column appears weekly in the Express-News and is syndicated to other Texas newspapers. He is an occasional contributor to a growing number of national publications.

His affinity for South Texans and their interests and needs stems from a long personal history of community involvement. The Robstown native and graduate of now-Texas A&M University at Kingsville, was a leader of numerous civil and equal rights efforts in South Texas from the 60s through the early 80s.

He helped to found the Mexican American Youth Organization and the Raza Unida Party and also led numerous civil rights struggles in the region.

He has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Latin America and was among the first Americans invited to visit post-World War II China.

After writing for numerous publications throughout the United States and Latin America, he joined the San Antonio Light as a front-page columnist in 1991. After the Light closed, he became a metro columnist for the Express-News.

When not documenting South Texas life, he shares custody of his daughter, is an avid salt-water angler and fly-tier and a dedicated cook.
