On Monday, April 15, Congregation Agudas Achim of Laredo and the City of Laredo, along with Texas A&M International University's College of Arts and Humanities will host Stephan M. Berk, professor of history at Union College in Schenectady, New York, in observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day. Dr. Berk will discuss "Lessons of the Holocaust" at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

Berk received the Holocaust Memorial Award from the Holocaust Survivors and Friends Education Center in 1996. The award acknowledged his dedication to increasing understanding and education about the Holocaust.

He is the author of Year of Crisis, Year of Hope: Russian Jewry and the Pogroms of 1881-1882 and Our People are Your People: American Jewry and the Struggle for Civil Rights 1954-1965. Berk has been invited to speak at universities across the country, including Princeton, Vanderbilt and the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Jerry Thompson, college dean, said honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day is important to anyone who wants to improve the future.

"By remembering this episode of history, we can all benefit and take steps to avoid similar situations. The implications can still be seen today and the lessons of the past need to be studied repeatedly in order to encourage growth and change in the present. The Holocaust is not just a dark time for the Jewish people, but a long shadow across the history of humanity," Dr. Thompson said.
