Texas A&M International University's Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library and the City of Laredo's Nonprofit Management and Volunteer Center, at the Laredo Public Library, are joining forces to help area residents and organizations find more resources and money for everything, from education to job training.

Two workshops will help participants discover sources for grant monies and information and statistics to support grant applications. The first workshop, entitled "Finding Funding Sources" will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, in the HEB Multipurpose Room at the Laredo Public Library. The second workshop, entitled "Finding the Numbers" will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, also in the HEB Multipurpose Room at the Laredo Public Library.

Joshua Been, A&M International government information librarian, will co-present the workshops and said they will be of great interest to anyone looking for new funding prospects.

"By combining the resources of A&M International's Killam Library with the resources at the Nonprofit Management and Volunteer Center, we'll be able to provide fairly comprehensive information to the participants. We should be able to show funding sources and data sources that will really help someone looking for monies," said Been. In "Finding Funding Sources," participants will learn about the wide variety of grant money available and "Finding the Numbers" will be helpful to anyone who needs data to support their grant proposal, explained Homero Vázquez, coordinator of the Nonprofit Management and Volunteer Center, and co-presenter.

"On May 1, in addition to discussing available federal and state funding, we will introduce the Foundation Center Search database, which has information on over 250,000 private foundations and corporations that give grant money," explained Vázquez.

Been plans on introducing new state resources that were not discussed at a recent grant workshop at Killam Library.

The second workshop, "Finding the Numbers," will teach participants how to locate and use the data which will support their grant applications, Been said.

"May 14th's workshop will show attendees how to access and use Census data, retrieve economic and educational data. This is the data you need to convince donors you're eligible for their grants. Not only can we help people find the information, but we can show them how to create output as well," said Been.

Each workshop serves as one of the three required workshops for agencies receiving third party funding from the City of Laredo, said Vázquez.

He said grant money is available and that the workshops should help people find suitable matches.

"The grant-giving organizations don't have as large a pool of applicants as they would like. The money has to be spent. There's a lot of local organizations that could benefit from grant money but they don't know about funds available, or they don't know how to put the need into numbers, how to show those numbers," said Vázquez.

Both Been and Vázquez said they were pleased to offer this combined effort to the community.

"We want to educate and make sure the resources of the libraries get used," said Been.

"At both libraries we have a lot of resources that people don't know about yet," said Vázquez.
