Texas A&M International University and Nuevo Laredo will celebrate letters and expressions from the borderlands during the Fifth Annual Gathering of Literature on the Border April 26-28.

Known as "Literature on the Border" or "Letras en el Borde," the event, free and open to the public, promises to attract prominent writers from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border and beyond. This year's featured guest author will be Argentina's Mempo Giardinelli.

The meeting aims to provide a forum for participants to discuss subjects relating to the borderlands, said Dr. José Cardona-López, assistant professor of Spanish, who is co-organizing the event with Dr. William Nichols, also assistant professor of Spanish.

"At this gathering, we will place special emphasis on creative works. Because of this, we have invited narrators, poets and playwrights," Cardona-López said.

He explained April 26 sessions will be held from 1:30 - 9 p.m. in the Casa de la Cultura of Nuevo Laredo, located at the corner of Héroes de Nacatáz and Juárez Streets. Sessions will continue April 27 at 7:30 a.m. at TAMIU Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 111. A closing reception will be held at 8 p.m. On April 28, participants are invited to stroll the streets of Nuevo Laredo with other participants.

The gathering is organized by the City of Nuevo Laredo, literary magazine "A quien corresponda" and TAMIU.
