S.A. Express-News Columnist Carlos Guerra Presents A.R. Sánchez Lecture

His insightful comments generate conversations in South Texas' kitchens and boardrooms and tend to dominate water-cooler banter every time they appear.

Carlos Guerra, metro columnist for the San Antonio Express-News, will be the featured guest for the Thursday, April 18 installation of Texas A&M International Univeresity's 2001 2002 A. R. Sanchez Lecture Series at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom, (203). His presentation for the evening will be "Texas Politics in the 21st Century: Has South Texas Come of Age?"

Guerra's column appears weekly in the Express-News and is syndicated to other Texas newspapers. He is an occasional contributor to a growing number of national publications.

His affinity for South Texans and their interests and needs no

doubt stems from a long personal history of community involvement. The

Robstown native and graduate of now-Texas A&M University at Kingsville, was a leader of numerous civil and equal rights efforts in South Texas from the 60s through the early 80s.

He helped to found the Mexican American Youth Organization and the Raza Unida Party and also led numerous civil rights struggles in the region. He has traveled extensively throughout the US and Latin America and was among the first Americans invited to visit post-World War II China.

After writing for numerous publications throughout the US and Latin

America, he joined the San Antonio Light as a front-page columnist in 1991. After the Light closed, he became a metro columnist for the San Antonio Express-News.

When not documenting South Texas life, he shares custody of his

daughter, is an avid salt-water angler and fly-tier and a dedicated cook.
