EMSAP: Road to Success for Five TAMIU Students

The road to medical school is a few steps shorter for five students who will be accepted into the Texas A&M International University and University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Early Medical School Acceptance Program (EMSAP). These students will be introduced at a reception on Thursday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. at TAMIU in the Student Center, room 210.

The 2002 EMSAP students are:

Ricardo Chapa, J.B. Alexander High School

Ignacio A. Flores, Zapata High School

Monica Guzman, United High School

Sandra Herrera, J.B. Alexander High School

Devry Saenz, J.B. Alexander High School

Dr. Juan Hinojosa, dean of TAMIU's College of Science and Technology, said he was pleased to invite these students and had high hopes for their success in the future.

"These students were selected as outstanding high school seniors. This is the fourth year of the program and we are pleased to give students the opportunity to enhance their competitiveness to gain admission into medical school," said Hinojosa.

Dr. Alfredo Treviño Jr. will be the guest speaker at the reception. Dr. Treviño received his M.D. from UTMB and is an ophthalmologist. He works with both Doctors Hospital and Mercy Health Center in Laredo.

Successful applicants to the program had at least a 3.0 GPA during their senior year and a score of at least 900 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT.

During their time at TAMIU, the students will need to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25 in both their science courses and overall. While undergraduates, students will take summer classes at UTMB all four summers and must receive a B or higher in all courses. To be accepted into UTMB the students must receive their Bachelor's degree at TAMIU and score at least 24 on the MCAT, with no sub-test score below 8.
