Texas A&M University System Board of Regents to Hold Meeting at TAMIU May 23-24

The Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System will hold its May meeting at Texas A&M International University May 23-24. This will be the first meeting of the Regents at the TAMIU campus since 1997.

The Regents meeting will primarily take place in the new Student Center Ballroom. Activities are also scheduled off site and include a visit to Casa Ortiz, a historic landmark building in downtown Laredo.

The nine-member Board of Regents governs the A&M System. Each regent is appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Texas Senate. Every two years, the Governor appoints three new Board members to serve six-year terms. They are not compensated for their service to the Board.

The Regents are Anne Armstrong, Phil Adams, Dionel E. Avilés, Ph. D,. Vice Chairman, Wendy Gramm, Ph.D., L. Lowry Mays, Erle Nye, Chairman, Lionel Sosa, R. H. (Steve) Stevens Jr., and Susan Rudd Wynn, M.D.

The Regents serve on standing, special and ad hoc committees including audit, finance, academic and student affairs, buildings and physical plant, campus art and aesthetic improvement, health affairs, educational access, policy review, public policy and planning and presidential library.

The Board schedules six regular meetings per year, and the chairman may call special meetings if necessary. Standing and special committees meet as needed and report to the full board. With few exceptions, all matters requiring board action are first considered by the appropriate committee, which then gives a report or makes a recommendation to the board.

The Texas A&M University System is one of the most complex and promising systems of higher education in the nation. With headquarters in College Station and a presence in every county in the state, the A&M System consists of nine universities, eight state agencies and a health science center that serve over 94,000 students and reach more than 4 million people each year through its service mission. Research projects under way today by system universities and research agencies total roughly $400 million.

The A&M System headquarters is located about 90 miles northwest of Houston. The system employs more than 23,000 faculty and staff members located throughout the state and serves all 254 Texas counties. The annual budget for the A&M System is approximately $2.0 billion.
